Honolulu CC Trains Thai
Educators
A delegation of educators from Thailand visited Honolulu CC from Oct. 14 to
18 to learn how to manage and administer new community colleges that opened
in that country. Honolulu CC is part of the East-West Community College Project
Consortium that was created in March 2001 at a Thai-U.S. Forum in Honolulu.
Beng Poh, director of international affairs and development at Honolulu CC explains
that as part of Thailands educational reform, the country has opened community
colleges in 10 rural provinces. Honolulu CC was the host campus for training
Thai Ministry of Education officials, administrators and community leaders in
community college administration, faculty development and teaching.
Four officials from the Malaysian Ministry of Education also visited the University
of Hawaii Community Colleges in October. Malaysia plans to establish 93
community college within the next five years and has already developed 17 of
them.

state Legislature.

Honolulu CC Students
Rebuild Zoo
Honolulu
CC carpentry students rebuilt a portion of the childrens petting area
at the Honolulu Zoo. The kitchen and grooming supply storage area burned down
in March 2002. The loss of the food preparation area caused many problems for
animal caretakers as food now had to be transported to that site. The zoo supplied
the materials and Honolulu CC students provided the labor.
Kahiki Sakata (top) and Elliot Lau, carpentry students at HCC, take part
in rebuilding the petting zoo kitchen as a class project.
UH Hilos Turtle
Rescue Mission
UH Hilo students were involved in a mission to rescue two green sea turtles
believed to have been trapped in an enclosed brackish water pond in Kau
for several years. The turtles were captured, examined and then released back
into the ocean. This mission was a multi-agency collaboration between UH Hilos
Marine Option Program, the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Services (USNMFS)
and the Hawai`i Preparatory Academy.
This rescue mission is not the first of its kind. In 1999, Balazs and students
from UH Hilo rescued a hawksbill turtle that was stranded in a murky pond by
the Punaluu Black Sand Beach. The rescue team removed a fishing line wrapped
around one of its front flippers, tagged it, checked it for other injuries and
then released it back into the ocean.

George H. Balazs of USNMFS gives students involved in the rescue mission
a few pointers on tagging.
