Israeli Peace Advocate Speaks at UH Manoa

Distinguished Israeli author Lova Eliav will present Making the Desert Bloom, the first in an annual series of lectures in Jewish Studies on Mon., Oct. 28, 7 p.m. at the UH Manoa Architecture Auditorium. Eliav has dedicated his efforts toward humanitarianism and peace advocacy. Making the Desert Bloom is free and open to the public.

Eliav has been a member of the Knesset and served as Secretary-General of the Labor party. He participated in numerous diplomatic and humanitarian missions including exchange negotiations during the Lebanon war. Eliav has been a major figure in the agricultural development of the Negev desert where he directed the planning and development of 50 villages and a town.

He has written more than a dozen books and has won several honors including the Ussishkin Prize for Zionist Literature, the Bruno Kreisky Peace Prize and the Prize of Israel, his nation’s highest civilian honor. For more information, read the press release.



UHM Hosts Pacific Islands Conference

two womenThe 27th Annual UH Pacific Islands Conference and the Fourth Hawai‘i Fall Celebration of Writers is on Tues., Nov. 5 to Fri., Nov. 8 at the Imin Conference Center and other venues. Registration is $35 general and $10 students, and includes free passes to four films premiering at the Hawai‘i International Film Festival.


Themed "Myths, Terrorism and Violence: Themes in Pacific and Asian Literature," this year’s conference features significant new work from filmmakers, fiction writers, poets and scholars from the Pacific and Asia regions. The conference will premiere movies including The Wrestlers (India), The Maori Merchant of Venice (Aotearoa/New Zealand), New Moon (Philippines) and A Poet (Indonesia).

The Fall Celebration of Writers will be celebrating several critically acclaimed local and visiting writers with discussions on their work in relation to the themes of the conference on Nov. 7 at 3:30 p.m. in UHM Kuykendall Hall 100, and 7:30 p.m. in the UHM Art Auditorium. Featured writers include Sia Figiel, Vilsoni Hereniko, S. Shankar, Robert Barclay, Ku‘ualoha Meyer, Ho‘omanawanui, Caroline Sinavaiana and Albert Wendt. New Speaker Series on UH Research

University Connections presents a new monthly speaker series on UH research and its commercial potential. Meet the Researchers brings UH scientists together with an investor, business executive or industry scientist to talk about UH projects and how they might eventually be commercialized.

The first Meet the Researchers presentation features Song Choi, UH Manoa mechanical engineering associate professor, who will talk about his team’s development of a semi-autonomous underwater robot for deep ocean repair, reconnaissance and intervention missions. Todd Petzer from Navatek, Ltd. will comment on some of the potential commercialization avenues for this technology. The presentation is on Wed., Oct. 30, noon–1 p.m. in room 20-A of the Ali‘i Place Building, 1099 Alakea St. It is free and open to the public, but individuals must RSVP by e-mail or call (808) 547-5644. The Three Musketeers at Leeward CC

Big Island Artist Morinoue at Koa Gallery

The Koa Gallery at Kapi‘olani CC presents an exhibit of work by artist Hiroki Morinoue entitled Recent Experiments. With nine new paintings, the Big Island artist invents a world that is simultaneously poetic, whimsical and meditative. Telecollaborative Learning Featured at Education Colloquium


UH Manoa’s College of Education presents a public colloquium, All the World’s a Classroom: Inspiring Telecollaborative Learning Activities in Underprivileged Schools on Fri., Nov. 12, 3–4 p.m. at the UHM School of Architecture Auditorium. The integration of networked technology introduces the possibility for students and teachers to acquire greater global awareness. All the World’s a Classroom will examine recent efforts to bring the global community into the classroom through technology. Guest speakers will share their experiences with the World Links program. World Links began as an educational initiative of the World Bank Institute in 1997, and has evolved as an independent, non-profit organization serving students and teachers in 27 developing nations across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America.

Pumpkin Carving Contest

The UH Manoa American Institute of Architecture Students will be hosting its 27th annual Pumpkin Carving Esquisse at the School of Architecture on Mon., Oct. 28, 5 p.m.–8 p.m. Students are allotted two hours to carve and sculpt their pumpkin creations and judging begins at 7 p.m. UH architecture faculty members and invited practitioners from the local community will judge the finished carved pumpkins based on originality, beauty, craftsmanship, use of the medium, and use of light.
