Clopton Award for Community Service
The Robert W. Clopton Award recognizes outstanding service by a University of Hawaii at Manoa faculty member to the non-University community. A statement of criteria used in judging candidates for the award is available from the Office of Faculty Development and Academic Support, Kuykendall 107, the office of college/school deans, or department chairs.
Nomination is by petition and should be submitted with statements of support from at least three people. Appropriate documents supporting the nomination and detailing the candidate's community contributions should be submitted along with a curriculum vita. Please send nominations to the Robert W. Clopton Award Committee, c/o OFDAS, Kuykendall 107. The annual winner will be selected by a panel of previous community service award recipients. Educational Improvement Fund 2002-2003
General Funds are available to faculty interested in improving instruction and learning effectiveness, enhancing the quality of learning opportunities at all levels within the University, but primarily at the undergraduate level. The Educational Improvement Fund provides and opportunity to capitalize on the creativity and imagination of our faculty to develop meaningful innovations that will benefit students.
Projects related to improving the quality of the general education experience, improving and/or monitoring the quality of the student experience, improving retention and graduation rates and ensuring access to core courses and smooth articulation between campuses, assessment of learning outcomes, and improving the availability and quality of distance learning opportunities are especially encouraged. All projects are one-time funded with a limit of $5,000 and must be completed by September 1, 2003. Proposals may include funding for equipment and software, relevant travel to workshops or professional meetings, or student help. The UH-Manoa Educational Improvement Fund faculty committee will review all proposals and make funding recommendations. The deadline for submitting project proposals is November 22, 2002. UH Staff Phone Directories Available
The 2002–2003 UH faculty and staff phone directories have arrived. UH Manoa departments and offices can pick up the directories at External Affairs and University Relations–Creative Services, Bachman Annex 2 (near the post office) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. No phone calls are necessary. Excellence in Teaching Awards
For academic year 2002-2003, the Board of Regents will present six awards to UH-Manoa faculty and the Chancellor will award additional citations in recognition of outstanding merit as teachers. The annual awards recognize the imporance that students, faculty and administrators place on quality teaching on this campus.
Any full-time faculty member with instructional duties at the undergraduate and/or graduate level (except previous BOR winners) with an established record of teaching for the last three years at UHM may be nominated. EWC or Research Institute joint appointees with at least 50% teaching loads during the previous three years are also eligible for the award. Meritorious teachers may be nominated by any student, faculty member, administrator, or alumnus/a. Successful nominees will be recognized as the Awards Convocation in September 2003. Nomination forms are available in college/school and department offices, in Sinclair and Hamilton Libraries, at ASUH and GSO offices, or from the Office of Faculty Development and Academic Support, Kuykendall 107 at 956-8075 or 956-3279.
