Board of Regents Approve
System Reorganization Proposal
The Board of Regents
held a special meeting on Dec. 12 where they approved a system level reorganization
plan. Highlights of the proposal include the creation of new offices for a chief
of staff, vice president for research, vice president for international education
and vice president for student affairs. It also creates a Council of Chancellors,
which reports directly to the president, therefore eliminating the Office of
the Senior Vice President and Chancellor for Community Colleges.
The board also approved the appointment of Rolf-Peter Kudritzki as UH Manoa
interim vice chancellor for research and graduate education and Carolyn Tanaka
as associate vice president for external affairs and university relations. For
more information read the press
release.
ITS to Launch
Anti-Spam Service
The
sheer volume of junk e-mail or spam, 3040 percent of all e-mail by some
estimates, and its offensive content, has catapulted spam into a major problem.
To deal with this nuisance, the universitys Information
Technology Services is in the final stages of testing SpamAssassin, which
will go live before the spring semester. SpamAssassin, a freeware package, is
the most common anti-spam approach deployed in universities around the country.
ITS had been blocking known sources of spam by subscribing to one of the most
well-known and well-respected "blacklists." However, spammers are
quite resourceful and the blacklist approach no longer provides adequate protection.
As a result, ITS will be using SpamAssassina stronger spam protection
for people who receive their e-mail through @hawaii.edu. Read
more about SpamAssassin and what it means for users.
Discounted Broadband
Internet Access for Faculty and Staff
ITS announces that Oceanic Time-Warner has agreed to consider a cable modem
discount program for UH, RCUH, EWC and UHF faculty and staff on all islands.
The establishment and discount rate for the prospective program will be based
on faculty and staff response to a simple two-question survey designed to gather
basic information about current subscribers and price sensitivity. If you are
a current broadband subscriber or have ever thought about high-speed Internet
access for your home, please take
the survey (press
