Waikiki Aquarium Announces Spring Activities
From January through May, the Waikiki
Aquarium has activities, fieldtrips and classes for the whole family. Families
can learn about Hawaiis shorelines and coral reefs as they explore
tide pools and reef flats, investigate aquarium reef life after dark, enjoy
a special overnight with the aquarium director, or solve a marine life mystery.
Opportunities for adults include field classes on Kaena Points natural
history, stingray tracking research and teacher workshops on conducting safe,
productive shoreline fieldtrips.
The Waikiki Aquarium sponsors natural history study tours that visit the oceans
most diverse environments, coral reefs. Discover Hawaiis pristine
reef wilderness, as well as other fascinating parts of the Pacific Ocean.
January aquarium activities include "Exploring the Reef at Night"

Media Culture Lecture
Frank
Rich, columnist for the New York Times and senior writer for the New
York Times Magazine, will give a lecture on The 24/7 Media Culture,
at the Campus Center Ballroom on Jan. 21, 7 p.m. One of the nations foremost
culture critics, Rich has written about issues and individuals ranging from
rap artist Eminem to Broadways Stephen Sondheim. For more information

Koa Gallery Remembers
Bumpei Akaji
Kapiolani
CC presents Bumpei Akaji, a Memorial Exhibit, Jan. 15Feb. 14,
at the Koa Gallery. The opening reception will be held Jan. 15, 57:30
p.m. with guest speakers. The exhibit commemorates local sculptor Bumpei Akaji
who was a veteran of the 100th Battalion and 442nd Combat Regiment. Akaji was
a Fulbright Scholar, local legend and maverick of the Hawaii art scene.
He created the Eternal Flame at the State Capitol, a new commemorative
sculpture at Fort Derussy honoring the 442nd Combat Regiment veterans and numerous
commissions from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. The Koa Gallery
at Kapiolani CC is open Mon.Fri., 10 a.m.4 p.m. and Sat., 10 a.m.2

M Butterfly
touring in Kona
The UH Hilo production
of M Butterfly will perform at Konas Aloha Theatre, Jan. 17-19.
M Butterfly by David Henry Hwang is based on the true story of Bernard
Boursicot who was charged with spying against the French government with his
lover, a Chinese opera singer who turned out to be a man. For more information

Collectors Gallery
The UH
Manoa Art Gallery presents Private Passions, an exhibit highlighting
pieces from the caches of private collectors Jan. 12Feb. 21. The works
come from South and West Asian cultures, and include Indian deities, Tibetan
carpets, Qajar paintings and Turkish textiles. A public reception will be held
Jan. 19, 24 p.m. The gallery hours are Mon.Fri., 10:30 a.m.4:30
