Medical School Receives $1 Million HMSA Endowment

The School of Medicine received a $1 million gift from the Hawai‘i Medical Service Association to establish an endowment for quality health care research. The fund will support the Hawai‘i Medical Service Association Chair for Health Care Services Quality Research, a position at the medical school that will provide leadership in health services research in order to improve the health of the people of the state of Hawai‘i.

"It is a goal of myself and all the faculty at the John A. Burns School of Medicine to provide leadership in the improvement of the quality of health care services provided in Hawai‘i," said JABSOM Dean Edwin Cadman. "With HMSA as our partner, I believe we can develop a nationally recognized health care services research program that will not only benefit the medical school, but especially the patients of our state." UH Hilo Building Dedicated

UH Hilo dedicated its new University Classroom Building on Fri., Jan. 17. The ceremony marked the official completion of the $19 million, three-story complex. "This ultra-modern 21st century piece of architecture reinforces the message that UH Hilo is a quality university poised to meet the bold challenges of the future," Chancellor Rose Tseng said. "Now we have modern state-of-the-art facilities and teaching tools that will enable us to not only maintain our commitment to excellence, but to take it to the next level."

The 85,000 square-foot building houses numerous state-of-the-art teaching accommodations. These include a 150-seat tiered lecture hall, six multi-media tiered classrooms equipped with distance education control and support facilities, seven special classroom/teaching labs and five computer/electronic classrooms. Public Meeting Held to Name UHM Buildings

A public meeting will be held on Wed., Jan. 29, 3–5 p.m. at UHM Campus Center Room 308 to hear comments and recommendations on proposals to name UH Manoa campus facilities in honor of Hubert Everly (Wist Hall, Annex 2) and Barbara Smith (Ethnomusicology Wing of Music Department). Interested faculty, staff, students, community representative and other individuals may present oral and written testimony.

Everly served as dean of the college from 1956 until his retirement in 1979, an unprecedented and unmatched tenure for a UH Manoa dean.

Smith is the founder of the ethnomusicology program and a tireless supporter of its activities.


January Board of Regents Meeting

At their monthly meeting on Jan. 17 at UH Hilo, the Board of Regents:
approved the Kahuawaiola Indigenous Teacher Education Program as a post-baccalaureate certificate program at UH Hilo
granted permanent status to two degree programs at UH Manoa—the bachelor of science in travel industry management and the master of science in kinesiology and leisure science
approved new contracts for UH Men’s Basketball Coach Riley Wallace and UH Men’s Volleyball Coach Mike Wilton

Candidates Selected for Law School Dean

Four candidates have been selected for the dean’s position at the School of Law. Presentations by the candidates will take place at the School of Law, Classroom 3 and the public is invited.

The candidates are:
Sylvia A. Law, Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Law, Medicine and Psychiatry at New York University and co-director of the Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties Program. Law graduated from New York University School of Law. Her presentation is on Tues., Jan. 28, 4–5:15 p.m.
Aviam Soifer, professor and former dean at Boston College Law School. Soifer graduated from Yale Law School. Soifer’s presentation is on Thurs., Jan. 30, 4–5:15 p.m.
John Yukio Gotanda, professor and director of the JD/MBA Program at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. Gotanda graduated from the William S. Richardson School of Law. His presentation is on Fri., Jan. 31, 4–5:15 p.m.
At this time, the name of the fourth candidate will not be released at the candidate’s request. Prior to the candidate’s arrival for a campus visit in early February, that candidate’s name and background information will be made public.

OTTED Sponsors Student Invention Competition

UH students have the chance to make it big this semester in the first ever Student Invention Competition. The Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development is offering a grand prize of $500 and the opportunity to commercialize the winning invention.

Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the spring 2003 semester are eligible to participate. Entry forms are available from OTTED and due Feb. 20. Read the complete story.


UH Student Caucus and UHPA Coordinate Peace Letter Writing Campaign

UH students and faculty coordinated a letter writing campaign to help citizens voice their opposition to a war against Iraq. The grassroots coalition made up of the UH Student Caucus, UHPA, Not In Our Name and the University Peace Initiative hope their effort will encourage President Bush to pursue a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Iraq.

"We believe that as responsible citizens and residents of the U.S. we are empowered and morally bound to speak up on matters that affect the common good," said Ruth Hsu of the University Peace Initiative. Read the press release or visit the Peace Letters Web site.
