Plant Biotechnology Comes
of Age at Windward CC
Windward CC has added a state-of-the-art Tissue Culture and Plant Biotechnology
Laboratory to its campus. This $40,000 facility, equipped with the latest in
biotech instrumentation, will bolster Windward CCs plant biotechnology
program. Windward CC is having a dedication ceremony on Feb. 5, 68 p.m.
at Hale Imiloa Room 101-A. Guests will be given a tour of the lab, followed
by a potluck dinner organized by students, faculty, staff and friends.
Federally and state funded, the new lab is the latest addition to Windward CCs
biotech program, which includes a climatically controlled glasshouse and Kuhi
Laau, a tropical plant and orchid identification facility. Students can
now propagate plant tissues, implant genes from one plant to another, perform
DNA sequencing and other experiments. Read the full story.

UHM Restores and Displays Charlot Mural
UH Manoa dedicated the Jean Charlot mural entitled Night Hula on Jan.
21 in Saunders Hall. Night Hula joins several other murals from the Jean
Charlot Collection on campus.
The 9x15 foot mural, which depicts an ancient Hawaiian hula scene at night,
was originally created as a private commission for a law office in Waikiki.
The mural was later moved to Kamehameha Schools where it suffered severe damage
from a storm. Kamehameha School was instrumental in raising funds to have the
mural restored, and The Jean Charlot Foundation, which was in charge of restoration,
donated the mural to the university. Laura Ruby, a UH Manoa art department faculty
member and her assistant, Martha Ridgley spent three years restoring the mural
and replacing damaged tiles. Read more about Ruby on the
people page.
