Hilo Holds Public Hearings on Tuition

UH Hilo will hold public hearings in February on a plan to change to a single tuition rate for lower- and upper-divisions. A single-tiered tuition structure would eliminate the sudden increase in tuition students encounter in the middle of their tenure and reduce inequities in the calculation of financial aid. It also encourages unclassified students to declare a major so that they will receive the most current advising and promote early evaluation of transfer students to avoid problems in meeting major or graduation requirements.

"The existing rate structure for lower- and upper-division students dates back to when UH Hilo and Hawai‘i Community College were merged so that students at Hawai‘i CC would pay the same tuition for courses from either campus," said Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs John Whittaker. Honolulu CC Children’s Center Receives Top Accreditation Honors

The Children’s Center at Honolulu CC received notification from the National Association for the Education of Young Children that it has again received accreditation from the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. NAEYC accreditation is a rigorous, voluntary process by which early childhood programs demonstrate that they meet national standards of excellence. Programs seeking accreditation undergo an intensive self-study and an on-site visit.

"This prestigious recognition has been achieved by only seven percent of early childhood programs nationwide. Less than 75 programs in Hawai‘i have earned this accreditation," says Sherry Nolte, associate professor of early childhood education and human services. Read more about it.

UHM Athletics To Be Broadcast Internationally

UH Manoa athletics will soon be seen in over seven million households throughout Asia and in Israel. KHNL/KFVE recently established broadcast agreements with networks in Taiwan, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Israel. More than 60 of this season’s contests will be televised, most receiving an average of two airings that will result in nearly 500 broadcasts throughout the countries.

"This is an excellent opportunity for UH to gain international exposure and promote the university and its athletic programs," said Herman Frazier, UH Manoa athletics director. "It also contributes to the University’s vision of establishing itself as a bridge between the East and the West." Read the press release.

Program Offers Free and Discounted Bus Passes to UHM Employees

Beginning in March, UH Manoa faculty and staff will have the opportunity to participate in a pilot bus pass program that aims to free up additional parking spaces for commuting students. Under the proposed plan, up to 100 free bus passes will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis each month, and 375 additional passes will be sold each month at $18–a one-third discount off the normal $27 cost.
