UH
Astronomers Discover Jupiter Satellites
Eight
new satellites orbiting Jupiter were discovered in early February by Scott
S. Sheppard and David
C. Jewitt from the UH Institute
for Astronomy and Jan Kleyna of Cambridge University. This brings the total
of known Jupiter satellites to 48.
The satellites were found using the worlds two largest digital cameras
atop Mauna Kea. Both telescopes and their imaging cameras represent the latest
technology has to offer. The International Astronomical Union formally announced
the first seven satellites on March 4 while the eighth was announced on March
5. Read more about the discvoery on the project Web

License
Agreement Signed with Hong Kong Company
The Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development (OTTED) signed
a technology license agreement with I-PHA BioPolymers Ltd. of Hong Kong for
a biopolymer production technology developed by Jian
Yu of UHM Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering. The
technology, which is patented by UH, uses fermentation as its technical platform
to convert organic waste materials into environmentally friendly bioplastics
and organic fertilizers.
"I am grateful for I-PHA Biopolymers willingness to make an investment
in a technology that can truly make a difference in our lives," said Richard
Cox, director of OTTED. "By helping commercialize this technology,
I-PHA BioPolymers will be helping to tackle one of those thorny problems that
confront virtually every country on earthsolid waste management and overflowing
landfillsand that will be a benefit to us all, truly a benefit to society."
