UH Astronomers Discover Jupiter Satellites

two menEight new satellites orbiting Jupiter were discovered in early February by Scott S. Sheppard and David C. Jewitt from the UH Institute for Astronomy and Jan Kleyna of Cambridge University. This brings the total of known Jupiter satellites to 48.

The satellites were found using the world’s two largest digital cameras atop Mauna Kea. Both telescopes and their imaging cameras represent the latest technology has to offer. The International Astronomical Union formally announced the first seven satellites on March 4 while the eighth was announced on March 5. Read more about the discvoery on the project Web site

License Agreement Signed with Hong Kong Company

The Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development (OTTED) signed a technology license agreement with I-PHA BioPolymers Ltd. of Hong Kong for a biopolymer production technology developed by Jian Yu of UHM Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering. The technology, which is patented by UH, uses fermentation as its technical platform to convert organic waste materials into environmentally friendly bioplastics and organic fertilizers.

"I am grateful for I-PHA Biopolymer’s willingness to make an investment in a technology that can truly make a difference in our lives," said Richard Cox, director of OTTED. "By helping commercialize this technology, I-PHA BioPolymers will be helping to tackle one of those thorny problems that confront virtually every country on earth—solid waste management and overflowing landfills—and that will be a benefit to us all, truly a benefit to society."

UH Partners with Local Agencies to Support Community Service Organizations

UH’s Center on the Family has joined forces with the Hawai‘i Community Foundation and Hawaiian Islands Ministries to form Compassion Capital–Hawai‘i Moving Forward—a partnership to improve the skills and performance of faith-based and community-based organizations as they meet the needs of low income and under-resourced people in Hawai‘i. Over the next three years, grant funds, training workshops, technical assistance, and organizational development will be made available to faith and community-based organizations.

"Our project recognizes the important services that faith and community based organizations are presently offering to the most vulnerable members of our community," said Sylvia Yuen, director of Center on the Family. "We’re pleased to be able to support that work through technical assistance and grants, which will strengthen the organizations’ capacity to serve," Read more.
