Law School Dean Selected

Soifer, professor and former dean of the Boston College Law School, has been
appointed the new dean of the William S. Richardson School of Law. Soifer served
as dean at Boston College from 1992 to1998 before resuming his teaching and
research career. He previously was a professor at Boston University School of
Law and the University of Connecticut Law School. Soifer steps in for Lawrence
C. Foster who indicated last year that he wished to return to teaching after
15 years in administration at the school.
"We are very pleased that someone with Professor Soifers highly-regarded
academic and administrative background will be joining us," said UH Manoa
Chancellor Peter Englert. "At the same time, I want to acknowledge the
contributions of Larry Foster to the successes of the program during his tenure
as associate dean and dean. Earlier this month we were visited by an accrediting
team from the American Bar Association and we believe they were very pleased
with the progress the school has made over the last few yearsthanks, in

Journalist Lectures at UHM
Sander Vanocur, a 40-year
veteran of print, broadcast, radio and television journalism lectured to UH
Manoa classes on mass media, the press and society on March 12. During Vanocurs
illustrious career, hes "done it all"newspapers, radio,
network television news, public broadcasting and cable television. Regular appearances
on NBCs Today Show, Huntley-Brinkley Report and First Tuesday brought

Held Tribute for Rep. Mink
The legacy of Rep. Patsy Mink was honored at the School of Law on Thurs., March
13. The tribute, entitled "Peace, Civil Liberties and Justice After September
11," featured keynote speaker John Trasvina, Stanford law professor and
former special council for immigration at the U.S. Justice Department. Trasvina
discussed the impact Minks resounding voice had throughout Hawaii
and the nation.
Following the lecture, the first annual Pasty Mink Legislative Fellowship was
awarded to law student Van Luong. The fellowship provides an annual $3,000 stipend
and the winner will work as a legislative intern for U.S. Congressman Ed Case.
