Manoa Professor J. Patrick Henry Receives Prestigious Humboldt
Research Award

Manoa physics and astronomy professor J.
Patrick Henry was recently named as a recipient of the Humboldt
Research Award for U.S. Senior Scientists. The award recognizes
his significant contributions to research in cosmology, the study
of the evolution of the universe.
In
addition to a monetary prize, Henry is being invited to conduct
research at a German research institute of his choosing. He plans
to spend four months in the summers of 2004 and 2005 at the Max
Planck Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik in Garching,
Germany. Henry will collaborate on the analysis of data from
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the European Space Agency's
XMM-Newton X-ray Observatory.
The award will be presented in Berlin by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
at a reception hosted by German President Johannes Rau at his official

Manoa and Singapore Educators to Collaborate on Mathematics Curriculum
The Curriculum Research and Development Group
(CRDG) of the College of Education at the
University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore
recently announced an agreement to collaborate on creating an introductory
engineering mathematics course for students in Singapore. The course would
emphasize problem-solving skills, and be modeled on the CRDG curriculum Algebra
I: A Process Approach.
The partnership is believed to be the first of its kind since the U.S. Department
of Education and the Singapore government signed a memorandum of understanding
last September, in which they agreed to cooperate to improve math and science
education.

Summer Programs at UH Hilo
Two special course offerings at UH Hilo are among those open to the public
this summer. One is for those with a musical ear, the other is an interdisciplinary
program for young Hawaiian students.
Summer Chorus Open to the Public
UH
Hilo Affiliate Professor of Music, Maestro Ken Stanton is
opening up his University Chorus class for a special summertime
session, accessible to all, regardless of musical training.
"We would like to make the chorus available to students, alumni and community
members who would like to have a pleasant, low-pressure singing experience during
the summer," Staton said. "We would also like a mix of ages."
The first session begins on Tuesday, June 17. There will be two sessions weekly.
Cost of the two-credit hours is $268. To register, please call the College

Program for Hawaiian Students Grades K-5
The University of Hawai‘i at Hilo's Na Pua No‘eau is currently
accepting applications from Hawaiian students in grades K to 5 to attend its
three-week Summer Youth Program on the UH Hilo campus. The program will be
held daily from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon, June 16 to July 3, 2003.
This year's theme is "Na lei hulu mamo - the prized and precious lei -
our kupuna." Children will experience this theme through interdisciplinary
classes in Hawaiian language, music, dance, physical education, video production
and Hawaiian culture. Space is limited.

Manoa Student Employee of the Year wins Regional Title, Misses
National Award by One Vote
University
of Hawai‘i at Manoa communications major Sean Ibara – already
a winner of the Student Employee of the Year award for the
UH system earlier this year – has also won the 13-state
