Steps Down as SOEST Dean
Barry
Raleigh, longtime dean of the UHM School of Ocean and
Earth Science and Technology, will step down from his deans
position on August 1 to return to faculty status.
"Dean Raleigh increased the research profile of SOEST, and along with other
units at Manoa brought us to new prominence as a premiere research institution," said
UH Manoa Chancellor Peter Englert. "Barry
is a nationally and internationally respected scholar and researcher, and I am
certain that he will contribute to the stature of the university by returning
to the laboratory and to the classroom where nurturing our students is a tremendously
invigorating part of our work."

Director Departing
System Director of Human Resources Peggy Hong is
leaving the university to take on the position of chief human resources officer
for the
Board of Water Supply. Hongs last day is June 30.
Hong has been with the university since 1979, working first as a classification
specialist for the university system and then as director of human resources
for the community colleges. She was named system director of human resources
in 1994 and has overseen many successful advancements within the department,
including streamlining and broad banding the classification and compensation
systems and creating a special compensation awards program and online 360 assessment/evaluation
system.
"I will miss the academic environmentfaculty and staff working together
to provide the best education for our students," Hong says.
Japan
History Book Wins Prize
The
Rise of Modern Japan, a high school history book co-published
by the Curriculum Research and Development Group and UH Press,
has been awarded the Franklin Buchanan Prize for 2003 by the Association
for Asian Studies.
On bestowing the award, AAS said "The Rise of Modern Japan is
an outstanding contribution to the study of Japan and to the
field of Asian studies
at the secondary level and serves as a brilliant example of how university
and K12 educators can work together." Read the whole

Womens
Campus Club Awards Grants
The UH Womens Campus Club awarded six grants totaling $14,975. These
grants are made possible by profits from the clubs Thrift Shop and Exchange
newsletter.
The grant recipients were
Hamilton Library, $5,000 for an
all-electronic kiosk for the lobby
The Library system,
$2,300 to restore two paintings by local artist Keiche Kimura
that will be displayed in Sinclair Library
The UHM Theatre and
Dance Department, $3,000 for musical instruments and costumes
The Campus Childrens
Center, $2,475 to replace shelves, tables and chairs
The Waikiki Aquarium,
$1,200 for sonic tags and batteries to track marine animals
Kapiolani CC,
$1,000 for printed information given to new students during orientation
