Board of Regents June Report


At their monthly meeting on June 20 at UH Manoa, the Board of Regents
approved the appointments of Sam Callejo as chief of staff, David McClain as vice president for academic affairs, Walter Jamieson as travel industry management dean, Shirley Daniel as interim chancellor of Hawai‘i CC, James Wills as business administration interim dean and Jan Yokota as capital improvements director
established a bachelor’s degree of applied business and information technology at Maui CC, an associate’s degree in digital media production at Leeward CC and the Myron "Pinky" Thompson Endowed Chair of Research
extended the contract for UHM Football Head Coach June Jones
honored outgoing regents Bert A. Kobayashi, Ah Quon McElrath, Capsun M. Poe and Kathleen K.S.L. Thurston

Klobe Receives Community Service Award

Professor Thomas Klobe, director of the UH Manoa Art Gallery, was honored with the Robert W. Clopton Award for Outstanding Community Service. The level of excellence that he practices with his students to implement the gallery’s exhibitions and catalogues have been acknowledged through professional awards in competitions sponsored by graphic and print trade organizations. Klobe was also instrumental in establishing and opening the State Foundation on Culture and the Art’s new Hawai‘i State Art Museum. Read more about Klobe.


Southeast Asian Studies Center Receives Funding

The UH Manoa Center for Southeast Asian Studies has been awarded $230,000 per year for the next three years through the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship Program of the U.S. Department of Education. The award will enable the center to fund graduate fellowship for students who study a Southeast Asian language. UHM is the only university in the United States that teaches all four levels of all four major Southeast Asian languages—Thai, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Indonesian.
