A Symphony’s History

Classical music lovers and history buffs will enjoy this latest release from Goodale Publishing—The Honolulu Symphony: A Century of Music by former UH Music Professor Dale Hall.

This one-of-a-kind volume traces the evolution of the Honolulu Symphony society and orchestra from its origins as a German beer drinking and music club founded in 1902, to the dynamic, multicultural symphony orchestra it is today.

In Hall’s chronicle, readers find a veritable who's-who of Honolulu philanthropy, specifically among the social elite of town, known for supporting the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra both through their passion for European classical music, and with their pocketbooks.

The Honolulu Symphony: A Century of Music
shines a spotlight on the men and women who made waves in the music scene, but now stand as footnotes in history. Examples include Princess Ululani Robertson, who became famous internationally playing Madame Butterfly; Korean conductor Won Sik Lim, who's guest appearance marked the first time an Asian maestro led the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and Hungarian-born conductor George Barati, who steered the orchestra from 1950-1967.

The Honolulu Symphony: A Century of Music is available the UH Bookstore, UH Press or BooklinesHawaii.com.
