UH Agrees
To Conserve Water
The
university and the Honolulu Board of Water Supply have entered into
a conservation partnership
to reduce water consumption 10 percent
by replacing all faucets, shower heads and toilets with low-flow
fixtures. UH Manoa is one of the island’s biggest water consumers—averaging
approximately 367 million gallons per year—and it is estimated
that this project will save 37 million gallons annually. UH President
Evan S. Dobelle, Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris, Board of Water Chair
and Chief Engineer Clifford Jamile and Manoa Chancellor Peter Englert
will sign the memorandum of understanding on Tues., Aug. 5, 2 p.m.
at Bachman Hall Front Lawn. All faculty, staff and students are invited
and encouraged to attend.
In
addition, other programs and projects such as water audits, low-flow
fixture retrofits, sub-metering, leak detection, drip
irrigation and
rain catchments systems will be implemented. The partnership
will also help educate students about cooperative water conservation.
