Governor Names New Regent
Maui businessman
James J. C. Haynes II was appointed to the Board of Regents
by Gov. Linda Lingle. Haynes, who is president of Maui Petroleum,
Inc., and vice president of Hawaii Petroleum, Inc., will
fill the Maui seat previously held by Everett Dowling. His appointment,
which takes effect immediately, will need to be confirmed in
the next legislative session. Haynes is a UH graduate. Read

$1.2 Million Freeman Grant Awarded To Community Colleges
Recognizing Kapiolani CC for its commitment to excellence in international
education, the Freeman Foundation has awarded a two-year $1.2 million grant
to establish an intensive second language learning and study abroad program
for full-time students attending UHs community colleges. The Integrating
International Language Study and Service Learning in Asia program will begin
in fall 2004. Students will take part in an intensive curriculum that develops
their second-language skills and enhances their understanding of cultures in

The university is proudly honoring the recipients of system awards for excellence
in teaching and service at the 2003 Convocation ceremony on Thurs., Oct. 2,
10 a.m. at UH Manoa Kennedy Theatre. A luncheon will follow the ceremony. To

Award for Outstanding Service
Kapiolani CCs Christine Neves was awarded the University of Hawaii
Community Colleges Chancellors Award for Outstanding Service. This award
acknowledges a civil service and/or administrative, professional or technical
staff member for outstanding service to the university. Read more about her.
UH Gives Its All for
AUW
Herman Frazier, UH Manoa
athletic director, was doubled teamed by Kathleen Watanabe,
state personnel director and Janice Kemp, deputy personnel director
at the Aloha United Way kickoff festivities on Wed., Sept. 3
at Tamarind Park. This years campaign theme is "Youre
Stronger Than You Think." The event featured arm-wrestling
competitions with UH coaches.
