Student Film Premieres at Hawaii Film Festivals
A
short film animation by students of Kapiolani CCs new
media arts practicum class will be showing at three of the most
prestigious film festivals in the state. The film Sugar Raid, premiered
at the Cinema Paradise Film Festival (Sept. 1925) and will
also be shown at the Ohina Short Film Showcase (Oct. 1718)
and the Hawaii International Film Festival (Oct. 30Nov.
9). Sugar Raid takes place in a post-apocalyptic super market with
a cast of characters comprised entirely of mutant candies.
Sugar Raid was created by Tracy Hirano, Brad Shimabukuro, Earl Gamiao, Nikita
Wong, Michelle Shishido, Warren Houghtailing, Lance Choe, Raymond Lee, Garrick
Oshiro, Dae Sung Han, Chan Fang Co and Corey Marlatt. Their instructor was Assistant
Professor Violet Murakami. Produced entirely
with digital technology, the students created the concept, storyboards, animatics,
matte paintings, script, music and voice acting for the project.

Kapiolani Culinary Arts Students Compete
Culinary arts
students at Kapiolani CC competed for the Pamela Young Mixed
Plate Scholarship. The scholarship was established by Young, whose
Mixed Plate specials highlight cuisine from Hawaii and around
the world. The students entered their own original recipes and
five finalists were selected to prepare their dishes for judges
on Mon., Sept. 22. The winner was Tiffanie Luke and the four finalists
were Ian Kubo, Jonn Nakata, Kyle Shimoda and Bobby Sohns.
Manoa
Breaks Ground on New Parking Structure
A groundbreaking
for the new UH Manoa four-story parking structure on Dole Street
was held on Fri., Sept. 26. The lot will be adjacent to the Kamakakuokalani
Center for Hawaiian Studies.
