
Hawai‘i CC Chancellor Search Begins
The search for a permanent chancellor for Hawai‘i
CC has begun. The position will be advertised extensively and the first
screening deadline for nominations and applications will be Nov. 17. A search
committee will then review candidate information during November and December
and on-site interviews will take place in December and
January. The new chancellor is expected to be announced in March or April,
pending Board of Regents approval.
"The best candidates will be dynamic individuals who are focused on
growth and can build relationships with business, cultural, governmental
and academic communities as well as be visible and involved in the
community and fully understand the mission of the community colleges
is access and affordability for our local citizens," said President
Evan Dobelle.

Nursing
Receives Grant for Advanced Practice Program
UH Manoa’s School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene has been awarded
a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
to enhance the primary health care nurse practitioner track. Graduates
of the program will improve access to primary health care services
for vulnerable individuals, families, and communities with specific
attention to the Native Hawaiian, Asian American and Pacific Islander
clients as well as those with special needs.

Grant Bridges Gap Between Mathematics and Engineering
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $250,000
grant to Monique Chyba,
a UHM assistant professor of mathematics, to develop an autonomous
underwater vehicle for ocean exploration.
Through a partnership between the UHM mathematics department
and the College of Engineering’s Autonomous System Laboratory,
the project will not only promote the application of mathematical
theories but also bridge the gap between the two disciplines
of math and engineering. The application of control theory to
underwater vehicles will demonstrate the potential for successful
collaborative efforts of engineers and mathematicians.
