Tsunoda’s Retirement Fundraiser Supports new Endowment

female portraitCommemorating her many years of service to the University of Hawai'i System, Joyce S. Tsunoda's retirement fundraiser on Tuesday, Nov. 18 will help establish an endowment to benefit the UH community college system.

The Joyce S. Tsunoda UHCC Leadership Development Endowed Fund will enable community college faculty, staff, students and administrators to participate in leadership training, professional development and other education-related classes and activities. These include seminars, fellowship programs and formal academic study.

"As I prepare to retire and leave the UH system that I have known, worked for and loved for almost 40 years, I am honored that an endowment fund in my name will continue to help the UH community colleges throughout the state," said Tsunoda, who has had a distinguished career. Read more.

NASA article Spotlights Hawai‘i’s Wake in the Pacific

The findings of a research team headed by UH Manoa International Pacific Research Center meteorology professor Shang-Ping Xie are the subject of an article called Little Islands-Big Wake recently published online by NASA.

Using images from space, satellite technology and other instruments, Xie and his team documented that, although geographically tiny, the Hawaiian Islands have a large effect on Pacific Ocean currents, clouds and winds.

The wake west of the Hawaiian Island extends some 3,000 kilometers (approx. 1,864 miles), and is roughly 10 times longer than any wake observed elsewhere, or previously thought possible.

The discovery, originally published in the June 15, 2001 issue of Science, gives scientists an altogether different view of air-sea interactions and has significant implications for climate models that are used to predict climate variations such as El Nino and global warming.

The article is a fast but engaging read, check it out at http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Study/Wake/.

EARTH University is a premier international agricultural university dedicated to education in the agricultural sciences and natural resource management based on sustainable development.

It is the intention of both universities that through this new agreement students and faculty members will be afforded opportunities to participate in academic exchanges, joint research projects, and collaborative endeavors that build a foundation for sustainable agriculture.
