Faculty
Allocated $300,000 for Scholarship and Scholarly Activities
A six fold increase in monies to support research activities among UH humanities
and arts faculty who have significantly less access to federal and extramural
grants compared to their peers in the sciences has been allocated by President Evan
Dobelle and Manoa Chancellor Peter
Englert. They each agreed to allocate $150,000 (totaling $300,000)
from the Research and Training Revolving Fund. The monies will support scholarship
and scholarly activities among faculty members who receive minimal support but
are still required to research and publish for promotion and tenure requirements.
Faculty will compete for the allocation. A review process will be administered
by a faculty subcommittee of the University Research Council who will review
each proposal, follow previously established criteria and award the grants.

Medical
School Awarded $9 Million for Infectious Disease Research
The John A. Burns School of Medicine was awarded a five-year $9.6 million grant
to establish the Pacific Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases Research. Led
by Professor Richard Yanagihara,
the center will draw on expertise within JABSOM and the Cancer Research Center
of Hawai‘i. A dramatic global resurgence of infectious diseases—HIV/AIDS,
tuberculosis, dengue fever, West Nile and SARS—is now the leading cause
of morbidity and mortality worldwide.
"Hawai‘i’s geographical location and the outstanding faculty
and researchers here conducting groundbreaking studies on infectious diseases
make the university the ideal setting for such a center," says JABSOM
Dean Edwin
Cadman. "This grant will help us lay the foundation for
establishing the medical school and UH as a global leader in research and training
for tropical medicine and infectious diseases."
