National
Academy of Sciences recognizes Klaus Wyrtki
Retired
Manoa oceanographer Klaus Wyrtki will
receive the Alexander Agassiz Medal and accompanying $15,000 prize
from the National Academy of Sciences. The medal, which will be presented
in Washington, D.C., April 19, is awarded every three years for original
contributions in oceanography. Wyrtki was chosen "for fundamental
contributions to the understanding of the oceanic general circulation
of abyssal and thermocline waters and for providing the intellectual
underpinning for our understanding of ENSO (El Nino)." In 2003,
Wyrtki received the first Prince Albert I Medal from the International
Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans.
Hilo’s Grabar
Receives Fulbright
Andrew
Grabar, Hilo associate professor of art, will lecture
and conduct research on postmodern interpretations of tantra as
a Fulbright scholar at Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur, Nepal,
during spring 2004. Grabar is one of about 800 U.S. faculty and
professionals selected for the 2003-04 Fulbright program.

Dan
Landis, Hilo affiliate professor of psychology,
delivered the keynote address at the Interknow Euroworkshop II
conference in Germany in November 2003.
Kapi‘olani's Sharon
Sussman, new media arts instructor, received a
$14,000 grant from the Wallis Foundation to develop a lecture series
that will complement creative media programs at Kapi‘olani,
Manoa and Leeward.
