The final candidates for the position of Hawai'i Community College chancellor have been selected.

David J. Mathieu, vice president for academic and student affairs at Normandale Community College in Minnesota. He has a bachelor’s in American Indian studies and a master’s degree in American studies from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of South Dakota.
Rockne C. Freitas, vice president and executive director of the Ke Ali‘i Pauahi Foundation. He holds a bachelor’s in animal science from Oregon State University and a master’s and doctorate in education from the University of Hawai‘i.
Gary L. Isham, chief executive officer of New Mexico State University at Grants Campus. He holds a bachelor’s in physics and mathematics from Whittier College, master’s in metallurgy and physics from the University of Utah, master’s in applied math from the University of New Zealand, master’s in mathematics and physics from Western Washington University, master’s in physics and chemistry from South Dakota Technology and a doctorate in science education and higher education from the University of Washington.

UH Begins Foodbank Drive

The university will hold its annual Foodbank Drive, Feb. 17–27. UH is the largest contributor group among state employees. Last year, the university collected more than five tons of food and nearly $30,000 in contributions. This year’s goal is 11,500 pounds of food and $33,000 in contributions. Requested food items include canned, bottled or vacuum-packed items such as meat, tuna, soups, pork and beans, spaghetti, chili, vegetables, fruits and complete meals. Each campus will determine its own drop-off location.

Vegetarian Café Opens at Manoa


The Ono Pono Café, an open-air mini-restaurant featuring delicious vegetarian fare made with organic, locally grown produce, opened at UH Manoa in the Sustainability Courtyard located next to Kuykendall. The Café is open Mon.–Fri., 7:30 a.m.–10 a.m. for continental breakfast and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. for lunch. The menu includes plate lunches such as coconut curry tofu, wild rice and walnut loaf, maui taro burger, mediterranean and mexican whole wheat wraps, soups and salads and a variety of beverages including organic teas and coffee, bottled water and fresh fruit juices. The produce for the café is supplied by IKOH (Invisible Kingdom of Humanity) Organic Garden.
