Discover the Nearest Young Planet-Forming Star
A team of researchers including Institute for Astronomy scientists Michael
C. Liu and Jonathan P. Williams,
have found the nearest example of a young planet-forming star. They discovered
a spectacular circumstellar dust disk with indirect evidence for newly formed
planets around the star AU Microscopium (AU Mic). At a distance of only 33 light
years, this is the nearest star with a visible disk. The results will be published
online in Science Express and in the print editions of Science and Astrophysical
Journal.
“We know that extrasolar planets are common, but understanding how they
form is an outstanding question,” says Liu. “Because AU Mic is so
near to Earth, it provides us a special opportunity to examine planet formation
in great detail.”

Receives Largest Private Gift Donated To UH System
UH Hilo received a commitment for a $2.4 million cash gift
from Alec and Kay Keith to establish an endowed scholarship
fund for
graduates of Hawai‘i
and Pacific Island high school students. The gift is the largest private
donation ever made to any institution in the UH system by an
individual.
“Kay and I appreciate just how necessary and important scholarships are,” Keith
says. “A student who works hard, shows potential and wants to go to
college should not lose that opportunity because of financial considerations.”
