Scientists
know far less about the thousands of “good” bacteria
that allow humans and other complex organisms to function normally
compared to the few dozen microbes that cause disease. Called
a new biological frontier, UH researchers Edward
Ruby and Margaret
McFall-Ngai recommend that biology be taught
in a new way, incorporating the growing knowledge about the importance
of beneficial microbial interactions and their evolutionary,
ecological, and biochemical impact on both animals and plants.
An article featuring Ruby and McFall-Ngai’s perspectives,
together with Brian Henderson of University College in London,
is featured in the Feb. 27 issue of Science.

Hamilton Library Extends Hours and Named “The Best”
In Honolulu Magazine’s March edition, UH’s Hamilton Library
was named “The Best of Honolulu.” A contributing factor of the
award was that Hamilton is open for business more hours than the average Hawai‘i
state public library.
And now, Hamilton Library will be open even longer—operating around-the-clock
three days a week for the remainder of the spring semester. Beginning Mon.,
March 8, Hamilton will open its doors at the usual time at 7:30 a.m. but will
remain open for business until Thursday at 11 p.m.—adding 25.5 hours
to the existing schedule.
