What's a "Virus-Free Zone"?
October once again marks National Cyber Security Awareness Month. Information Technology Services (ITS) will be hosting a "Virus-Free Zone" at UH Manoa Campus Center Mall. This event is being held to emphasize the importance of securing personal computers to prevent virus/worm infections and outbreaks. Students, Faculty and Staff are invited to bring their laptop computer to have it scanned by ITS Help Desk staff to check for vulnerabilities and latest security patches. IT vendors will also be on hand to offer demos and giveaways to attendees.
The event will feature a fair-like atmosphere with exhibitor tables along the Campus Center mall during the heavy traffic lunch period. Exhibitors will be on hand to expose students to safe computing practices in a fun setting. Participants include:
- Apple Computer
- CCB Activities Council
- CompUSA
- Dell
- ITS Help Desk
- Pepsi Bottling Group
- UH Bookstores
- University Dining Services
Limit one entry per person. Must be present to win. Full-time employees of Virus Free Zone @ UH sponsors and exhibitors are not eligible to enter the prize drawing.
To encourage attendees to visit all exhibitor tables, a "Virus-Free" drawing will be held at 20-minute intervals at different exhibit tables. Attendees can enter the drawing by bringing their laptops to be scanned for vulnerabilities or correctly answering true or false quiz questions related to some aspect of promoting a virus free computing environment. Completed entry forms must be turned in at the prize table so participants can have their hands stamped to show that they have been certified to be "virus free." Questions will be designed to educate the attendees about safe computing practices while encouraging them to visit all the exhibitor tables since the correct answers to different quiz questions will be posted at each of the exhibitor tables.
