Navigate the World Wide Web

Print a single page from a web browser program

Evaluate an information sources in relation to an information need

Identify criteria used in evaluating an information source in relation to an information need

Evaluate the credibility of an information source

Describe criteria used in evaluating the credibility of an information source

Determine if the use of information requires citing its source.

Provide a rationale behind the decision to cite an information source,

Choose the most appropriate information finding strategies and tools for getting needed information.

Identify the most effective search string using Boolean operators for finding information

Write an effective search string using the most appropriate search terms combined with a Boolean operator ( AND, OR, NOT)

Use two indexes and/or databases to locate items relevant to an information need

Use search limiters in an index or database

Identify appropriate search terms for finding information relevant to an information need

Distinguish between primary and secondary sources

Describe a defining characteristic of a primary source

Distinguish between scholarly and popular sources

Determine the name of the individual/agency/organization responsible for an information source

Determine the name of the parent/affiliate/sponsoring agency/organization.

Name the parts of a URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

Match top level domains, or extensions, with the type of web site with which they would most likely be associated.

During the exam, students will be asked to demonstrate these skills by completing the following:

Given a stated information need and access to several different information sources,

  1. evaluate each information source to identify the one that best matches the information need, and
  2. specify two criteria used in evaluating and identifying the best match.

Given access to an information source,

  1. evaluate the credibility of the source, and
  2. specify two criteria used in determining the credibility of the source.

Given a description of a specific information source and a specific use of the information found there,

  1. determine whether or not the source would need to be cited with a full reference, and
  2. specify the reason why it would or would not need to be cited.

Given a description of a specific information need and a descriptive list of information sources,

  1. identify the source most likely to meet the stated need, and
  2. specify two criteria used to determining the best source.

Given a description of an information need and a list of search strings using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), identify the search string most likely to result in finding information that matches the stated need.

Given a description of an information need, write a single search string using a Boolean operator (AND, OR, NOT) that will be most effective in finding information that matches the stated information need.

Given a stated information need and access to the the Windward Community College Library Web site, identify one information finding tool on the Web site that would be most appropriate to use in searching for information that matches the stated information need.

Given a stated information need and access to a specified index or database available on the Windward Community College Library Web site

  1. search for and identify an item that meets the stated specific information need, and
  2. print the first page of information regarding the identified item.

Given a stated information need and access to a second specified index or database available on the Windward Community College Library Web site

  1. search for and identify an item that meets the stated specific information need, and
  2. print the first page of information regarding the identified item.

Given access to a specific information source,

  1. identify the name of the person or organization directly responsible for the information source, and
  2. identify the name of that organization's parent, affiliate, or sponsoring organization.

Given a descriptive list of example information sources,

  1. identify all which would be considered primary source material, and
  2. describe a key characteristic of primary source materials.

Given a list of names for the different parts of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL), correctly label each part of a sample URL.

Given a descriptive list of sample fictional Web sites, choose the URL extension (such as .com, .edu, etc.) most appropriate for each.
