Research Interests
My research interests lie in the effects of environmental stress on the development of marine invertebrates. Because of rising ocean temperature due to global climate change, as well as pollution from runoff of pesticides and other chemicals, it is increasingly necessary to examine how toxin exposure and thermal stress affect gene expression and morphological development in embryos and larvae. Working with Dr. Elaine Seaver at the Kewalo Marine Lab, my goal will be to determine how gene expression is affected by environmental stresses in the development of the polychaete worm Capitella sp.I, and to use in situ measurements to determine to what degree these animals are experiencing temperature and chemical stresses in the wild.
