Research Interests
I am studying native Hawaiian forest birds at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, on the Big Island. Although the area around Hakalau, an old name meaning "many perches," is one of the last great remaining strongholds of native forest birds, it is also being invaded by avian malaria, avian pox, and mosquitoes that carry these diseases. Research is focusing on the relationship between mobility of birds and their likelihood of contracting disease. I am also interested in science education, and have an ongoing GK-12 project called Kolea Watch where students around the state enter observations on the migration of the Pacific Golden Plover onto a web database.
