Rebecca Ostertag
Hilo
UH Hilo students express high regard for Assistant Professor of Biology Rebecca Ostertag’s high level of involvement and superior teaching ability. She provides them with needed criticism in a way that is positive and supportive.
Ostertag combines teaching concepts with field based experiences that utilize the extraordinary landscape diversity of the Big Island. Her interest in forest restoration and the role of non-native species in forest ecosystems has allowed students to understand how ecological theory can be applied to environmental issues.
One student wrote, "She is genuinely interested in the education process while also engaging in current and inspirational research."
The Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching is awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students.
