Chung Zuyoung

Chung Zuyoung’s paintings reference traditional Korean painting of the Chosun period (1392–1910). By enlarging a very small area of a masterwork she achieves an idealized and abstract landscape without abandoning the representational elements of the original. By the repetitive touch and rhythm of brushstrokes and a harmonious relationship between lines and empty space, Chung evokes the aesthetics of the masters within the emotive format of contemporary Western art.
