Connect K\u0101kou: Connecting ‘all of us together’<\/em> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Connect K\u0101kou<\/strong> is the statewide broadband initiative, spearheaded by Governor Josh Green’s office, to ensure that communities across Hawai\u02bbi have access to reliable and affordable high-speed Internet<\/strong> (connectkakou.org<\/a>). Hawai\u02bbi has already been awarded over $390 million in federal funding for broadband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Once in a Generation Investment Opportunity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hawaii\u2019s remote location requires smart, sustainable investments in inter-island submarine fiber optic cables, carrier-neutral submarine cable landing stations, and terrestrial fiber networks to connect all communities to the Internet. Today, more than $390 million is available to Hawai\u02bbi to achieve universal access and digital literacy for all<\/strong>. Funding has been dedicated towards middle mile and last mile infrastructure developments with priority to unserved and underserved areas. This broadband investment initiative will leverage a number of major sources of federal funding, including the Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund and the #InternetForAll programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BEAD <\/em>Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The University of Hawai\u02bbi is coordinating the largest of these efforts, the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment <\/em>(BEAD) program<\/strong>, which includes nearly $150 million to provide access to unserved and underserved locations in Hawai\u02bbi where high-speed Internet is not available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
