"The Visitors"-- MFA thesis exhibition

February 13, 2011 - February 25, 2011
Mānoa Campus, Art Building, Commons Gallery Add to Calendar

"The Visitors," an MFA thesis exhibition by Elizabeth Curtis, is an examination of what it means to be a “visitor.” It explores issues of identity, preservation, and globalism through photographic imagery. Subjects are portrayed in a manner that references formal Victorian portraiture conventions against the backdrop of three contemporary “sites”--the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, and Waimea Bay Beach Park. The locations where the images were created form a loose representative triad of history, nature, and culture. The categories overlap, merge, and fold over on themselves to create a snapshot of an increasingly globalized world in which we all traverse as mere or mighty visitors. Opening reception: Sunday, February 13, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
