New Approaches to Asian Economic Cooperation and Development

Professor Seiji Naya was a pioneer of the study of Asian economic cooperation and an indefatigable advocate of ASEAN cooperation for almost a half-century. In recognition of his many accomplishments, the Thai National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) will bestow upon Professor Naya the prestigious Honorary Doctorate Award, the first foreigner to receive one. On occasion of this celebration, the East-West Center will host a seminar, “New Approaches to Asian Economic Cooperation and Development,” which will include presentations from noted scholars from throughout the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Topics will include economic integration and productivity, the future of the Asian model of export growth, and challenges facing the region in the post-crisis era. In anticipation of the APEC Summit in Honolulu this year, the conference will also consider the “variable geometry” of Asia-Pacific cooperation, with presentations related to emerging institutional arrangements in the Asia-Pacific such as the ASEAN Economic Community, the ASEAN+3, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
