Refugee Insights into North Korea lecture

February 23, 5:00pm - 6:00pm
Mānoa Campus, East-West Center Gallery, John A. Burns Hall Add to Calendar

Noted economist Marcus Noland will present a free public talk to discuss findings from his recently published book, “Witness to Transformation: Refugee Insights into North Korea,” which provides a portrait of North Korea based on the experiences and views of the growing number of defectors who have fled the country.

Co-authored by Noland and Stephen Haggard, the book is based on unprecedented large-scale surveys of North Korean refugees in China and South Korea. It uncovers powerful social changes that are underway in North Korea, including increasing inequality and corruption, as well as changing attitudes about social status, government and reunification with the South.

Noland is an East-West Center Senior Non-Resident Fellow and Deputy Director of the Peterson Institute of International Economics. He has written extensively on the economies of Japan, Korea, and China, as well as the problems of North Korea and the prospects for Korean unification. His book "Avoiding the Apocalypse: The Future of the Two Koreas" was awarded the prestigious Ohira Memorial Award. Noland was formerly a Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers in the Executive Office of the President of the United States and has been widely quoted in the press on North Korea issues.
