“The Making of The Glades Project.â€
By Connie M. Florez
We begin with the Glade Show Lounge, located in the heart of Honolulu’s old Chinatown red light district. The billboard moniker read in brightly lit lights: Glade Show Lounge—Where Boys Will Be Girls. Through intimate life-story interviews, this documentary celebrates the creativity and resilience of a performance community of local Mahu—where genders blurred and ordinary boys became beautiful girls—and brings to light stories of their unseen struggles as a marginalized Pacific Island minority. Director Connie Florez will discuss the making of this film project that takes viewers deep into the body and soul of a hidden Honolulu.
Connie M. Florez is the director, producer, and historical researcher for The Glades Project. She has also been involved with directing and screening the Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival. Connie currently serves as the CEO of Hula Girl Productions, an independent film and television company.
