Fiction, Nonfiction, and Biography: Researching Across Genres

Writers of fiction, nonfiction, and biography share many narrative impulses, but often approach and understand their research very differently. This talk will address three different projects—a scholarly study of early eighteenth century autobiographical writing by women, a historical novel that fictionalizes real events, and a nascent creative nonfiction account—that have required tackling historical research and life writing.

Katharine Beutner teaches creative writing and literature in the English Department at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa. Her critical work focuses on eighteenth-century women writers, life writing, genre, and gender/sexuality. Her first novel, Alcestis, won the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction in 2011.
