The U.S. and Asian Economies: Current Status and Outlook
Dr. Il SaKong
Chairman and CEO, Institute for Global Economics
Dr. Il SaKong, Chairman and CEO of the Institute for Global Economics, a private research institute which he founded in 1993, will present his perspective on the current state of economic relations between the United States and Asian economies. He has served as Finance Minister of the Republic of Korea (1987-88), Senior Secretary to the President for Economic Affairs (1983-87), Ambassador for International Economy and Trade (2000-2002), Special Economic Adviser to the President (2008-2009) and Chairman of the Presidential Council on National Competitiveness (2008-2009). Dr. SaKong also led and coordinated the Korean government’s G20 endeavor as Chairman of the Presidential Committee for the 2010 G20 Seoul Summit (2009-2011). Dr. SaKong has written extensively on macroeconomic policy and economic development, international trade and finance, including regular columns in major Korean newspapers. His books include The World Doesn’t Wait For Us (Seoul, 2003), and The Korean Economy: Still a Long Way to Go (Seoul, 2013). He earned a bachelor’s degree from Seoul National University (1964) and MBA (1966) and PhD (1969) from UCLA. Dr. SaKong served on East-West Center’s Board of Governors from 2002-2013 and on its International Advisory Panel from 1997 to 2002.
