Kamehameha Publishing and Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge are hosting a book launch to celebrate the publication of Kamanamaikalani Beamer’s “Na Mākou ka Mana: Liberating the Nation.”

“Na Mākou ka Mana” studies the birth, repression and reemergence of a Hawaiian national consciousness. Beamer argues that in building the Hawaiian nation in the 19th-century, the aliʻi created a hybrid nation-state to resist colonialism and protect native interests. Beamer says:

"This collection of moʻolelo demonstrates aliʻi brilliance, courage, and unwillingness to surrender to a foreign hegemonic force. Highlighting the achievement of ancestors frees their spirits and allows us to view our forbears as more than victims. Focusing on the deliberate decisions and accomplishments of the aliʻi also empowers ʻŌiwi to continue to control our future and to liberate our minds from previously conceived binaries and limited possibilities.”

A reception will be followed by an author’s talk and book signing.

Kamanamaikalani Beamer has a PhD in Geography. He is an assistant professor in the Hui ʻĀina Momona program at UH-Mānoa, serving in the Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge and in the William S. Richardson School of Law as part of Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law.
