The impetus for the collection of personal stories came from the question: What happens to traditional core values of Filipinos if they cease to honor them as they live away from the Country? And if values are maintained, which ones would Filipinos NOT give up because in doing so, they would no longer be recognizable as Filipinos even to themselves? These Filipino writers explore the beliefs, attitudes, practices and rituals they drew on to deal with life's major transitions.

Virgie Chattergy is a Professor Emeritus and Assistant Dean at UHM College of Education. She pioneered the inclusion of natal language sensitivity and cultural diversity in teacher education at UH Mānoa at a time when the idea was new. Dr. Chattergy received her Ed.D and Master of Arts Degree in Education from UCLA.
