Brown Bag Biography-Writing after Murder: Literary Reportage from Metro Manila

In this talk, Laurel Flores Fantauzzo will read excerpts of nonfiction writing set in Metro Manila from 2016 to 2018. Each piece of first-person nonfiction details the intimate impact of violence on individuals in the contemporary Philippines. The writer will offer reflections on the emotional, logistical, and ethical challenges of writing after murder in the Philippines, and she will address questions of subjectivity and audience regarding such content.

Laurel Flores Fantauzzo's essays have appeared in the New York Times, World Literature Today, and The Mekong Review. Her nonfiction book, The First Impulse, was shortlisted for the 2018 Philippine National Book Award, and was named a best book of 2017 by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, CNN Philippines, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. She currently teaches in the English department at UH Mānoa, and is at work on her first novel.
