April 2, 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Law School Library 2525 Dole Street Add to Calendar

Students, veterans, family members, and advocates will have an opportunity to learn more about how the judicial appeals process for veterans’ claims works at a seminar from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 at the William S. Richardson School of Law.

A federal appeals court judge will provide insight at the workshop organized by the Elder Law Program and the Elder Law Clinic - Veterans Focus at the UH Law School.

“An Update on the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims by Judge Coral Wong Pietsch” will offer perspective into the youngest of the United States courts of appeals, including a discussion of significant recent court cases and updates to the appeals process for veterans claims.

The seminar is designed to help individuals understand this unique court and how to navigate a process that has been called “veteran-friendly” but is complex. Judge Pietsch will give an overview of the CAVC which has exclusive jurisdiction over decisions of the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. The CAVC is part of the federal judiciary system and is independent from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Judge Pietsch was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) in 2012 by President Barrack Obama. She was the first woman to be promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corp, and was also the first woman of Asian ancestry to be promoted to Brigadier General in the Army.

Professor James H. Pietsch, Director of the UH Elder Law Program will introduce Judge Pietsch.

Refreshments will be provided in the Law School Library before the presentation. Parking is available in the Quarry Parking structure for $6. The UH Law School Library is at 2525 Dole St.
