"Subak: Protecting Bali's Cultural Landscapes" with Wiwik Dharmiasih
January 26, 2:30pm - 4:00pmMānoa Campus, Zoom

Subak, the traditional farming system in Bali, was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. However, developmental challenges such as land use change, water access, land taxation, and aging farmers threatened the existence of the subak system that has existed for a millennium. This presentation examines the inscription of subak system into UNESCO World Heritage List, the ways that new conflicts have emerged, and offers new pathways to protecting socio-ecological practices as a foundation for environmental peacebuilding. This is an interactive presentation that includes a discussion section with students from the Eikei University of Hiroshima, Japan. Part of Cross-Cultural Conversations brought to you by the Matsunaga Institute for Peace, and Peacebuilding LLC.
