Dark Matter and Neutrino Physics Measurements Underground at SNOLAB

January 26, 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Wat. 112

Department of Physics and Astronomy Colloquium: Prof. Art McDonald, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, to speak on "Dark Matter and Neutrino Physics Measurements Underground at SNOLAB."

Abstract:
The expanded SNOLAB underground laboratory is in operation with clean-room conditions throughout at a depth of 2 km in an active nickel mine near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The existing and future experimental program will be discussed with particular emphasis on: 1) the DEAP-3600 experiment that will use 3600 kg of liquid argon to detect dark matter particles and 2) the SNO+ experiment that will use the refurbished SNO detector with liquid scintillator and a dissolved neodymium compound to study neutrino-less double beta decay, low energy solar neutrinos, geoneutrinos, supernova neutrinos and reactor neutrinos.
