Shakeup in Canberra: Interpreting the Gillard-Rudd Rivalry and the Implications

The recent resignation of Australia’s Kevin Rudd as foreign minister, and his subsequent parliamentary challenge to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, underscore the fascinating political dynamics currently at play within Australia’s political system. As one of America’s closest allies and a major influence in the Pacific islands region, what does this mean for the Australian policy in Asia Pacific? The roundtable discussion will provide an overview of the current political climate in Australia as well as observations from long-time observers of Australia’s current affairs.

Consul General Scott Dewar represents Australia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Hawai‘i. Mr. Richard Baker is an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the East- West Center and a former Foreign Service Officer who served in Canberra. Mr. Baker closely follows Australia’s political affairs.

Dr. Tarcisius Kabutaulaka is an Associate Professor of Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa and an Adjunct Research Fellow with the East-West Center’s Pacific Islands Development Program.
