Seiji Naya Asia-Pacific Lecture on Income Inequality in Japan

November 8, 4:30pm - 5:30pm
Mānoa Campus, George Hall 227

The Department of Economics invites you to the first Seiji Naya Asia-Pacific Lecture in the series the Department of Economics has established to honor Professor Seiji Naya. This year, we are proud to announce that Dr. Chiaki Moriguchi from Hitotsubashi University in Japan will give a lecture on “Income Inequality in Japan: Comparative and Historical Perspectives”.

The rise in income disparity in recent decades is a major public concern in Japan. Is Japan no longer an “equal society”? To what extent has inequality increased and with what consequences? How did Japan become such an egalitarian society in the past? Dr. Moriguchi will answer these questions by using long-run historical data from the World Top Incomes Database to re-evaluate the recent trend in income inequality and explore its implications for Japan from historical as well as international perspectives.

This lecture will take place at 4:30 pm, November 8, 2012, in George Hall 227. Light refreshments to follow in Shidler College courtyard. The East-West Center is a co-sponsor of this event.

Dr. Moriguchi received her PhD in Economics from Stanford University and is currently a professor at the Institute of Economic Research at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, Japan. Her recent publications have appeared in leading academic journals such as Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Economic History, and Industrial and Labor Relations Review.
