Crafting Cyber-Selves

April 18, 12:00pm - 1:15pm
Mānoa Campus, Henke 325

By examining popular social networking sites such as Instagram and YouTube as dynamic cultural sites of re/production and re/presentation of the self, Li-Anne and Lisa will explore the ways humans are coupled with or mediated by technology, and how those technologies themselves co-produce and inform life narratives.

Given the social aspect of these sites, the self is simultaneously constituted online with other people and communities, but also through the technology and digital spaces in which these realities are constituted. The complexity of these digital relationships begs the question of who owns and is given access to, but more importantly who writes, these realities that are necessary condition of the self.

Li-Anne Dela Vega is a second year master’s student in Composition and Rhetoric at UHM. She is currently working on her project about the perceptions and writing practices of AD/HD college students. Her academic interests include the rhetoric of technology, digital writing and identity construction, and disabilities in composition studies .

Lisa Shea is currently completing her MA and continuing on to the PhD in English at UHM in the Fall. Her current research explores the intersections between the disciplinary fields of computers and composition with life writing, and she hopes to extend this research to consider how these areas intersect and diverge, examining technology not simply as a tool but as a cultural force that mediates human interaction.
