Azerbaijan: A Trusted Ally U.S. in a Turbulent Region
March 27, 5:30pm - 7:30pmMānoa Campus, John A. Burns Hall, East-West Center Gallery
The Honorable Nasimi Aghayev, Consul General of the Republic of Azerbaijan, will share his insight on Azerbaijan’s crucial role in the Caspian region, and its relationship with the U.S., Israel, and her neighbors. Azerbaijan is the only country that borders both Iran and Russia. The current troubling developments in the post- Soviet area, especially the crisis around Ukraine’s Crimea region and Russia’s increasingly assertive foreign policy are causes for huge concern for the West and former Soviet republics. Azerbaijan is an important ally of the United States, European Union, and Israel. By sending peacekeeping troops to Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan and by taking part in the U.S. fight against terrorism, it made the country an important contributor to international security. Azerbaijan is experiencing rapid economic and social developments and has become an investment opportunity as an oil-rich nation with massive deep-water oilfields. Several international oil companies are helping develop the country’s oil and gas projects. Yet, the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) project that transfers natural gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe, may cause friction with other regional gas exporters such as Russia and Iran.
About the Honorable Nasimi Aghayev: Nasimi Aghayev serves as the Consul General of Republic of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles with a consular district of 13 Western U.S. states.
