PaCES Student Research Symposium

July 18, 8:00am - 12:00pm
Windward Campus, Hale Akoakoa 105

Using scientific surveying techniques of coral reefs in Kane‘ohe Bay is just one of the ways high school students are learning about the health of their environment in Windward Community College’s PaCES (Pacific Center for Environmental Studies) summer program. Students will present their findings in a symposium at Windward Community College. The public is invited to the PaCES symposium, where students will report on their group research projects ranging from water quality analyses in mountain streams to coral reef assessment. Keynote presentation by Dr. Rob Toonen of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, followed by student group research presentations, awarding of certificates, and a chance to meet some of the teachers and students participating in the program. Refreshments provided. Formal program will start at 8:30 a.m. The 2015 PaCES Summer Environmental Science Program is an intensive 6-week program providing high school juniors and seniors from 14 of Oahu’s public and private schools with hands-on education and research experiences in environmental science. The students will receive four (4) college credits and a $1,000 scholarship. PaCES’ goal is to introduce a new generation to the environmental issues that threaten our fragile ecosystem. The program embraces an integrated ecosystems approach by examining the Kane‘ohe Bay watershed from ridge to reef. Applying this approach, participating students learn about basic environmental science concepts, water quality analyses, stream assessment, coral reef monitoring, molecular applications to environmental science, and traditional and modern resource management practices. Important themes to this program are ahupua‘a and stewardship.
