"Exposure Outliers: Children, Families, and Disaster Recovery in an Age of Environmental Extremes"
This presentation by Dr. Lori Peek (director of the Natural Hazards Center and professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Colorado Boulder) will focus on how pre-disaster stressors emerging from structural inequalities and health and financial problems, high levels of material and social losses, and protracted and unstable post-disaster displacements lead to problem pile-up and a downward spiral in the aftermath of disaster.
This study of exposure outliers offers insights regarding how families and communities can begin to prepare for a future that is likely to be increasingly punctuated by more frequent and intense extreme weather events and other types of disaster.
