Gail Ainsworth, Professor and Librarian, Maui CC, was appointed a board member to the Hawai`i Council for Humanities -- the state arm of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Rhonda Bentz, Nurse Practitioners program, and Instructor, Health Center, Maui CC, directed a $36,000 grant from the federal Area Health Education Center (AHEC) agency for the design and implementation of a nursing curriculum for tele-health, whereby patients are monitored in their homes via TV over a regular telephone line.

Bruce Butler, Assistant Professor of Science, Maui CC, chaired the Campus Reorganization Committee with goals of improving efficiency and effectiveness on campus. Over 30 faculty, staff, and administrators met regularly throughout the academic year and every week during the summer months to evaluate concepts such as tri-semesters, organized marking techniques, divisional structures, and communication among all levels of the campus.

Doris Casey, Assistant Professor, Nursing; Rose Foronda, Instructor, Nursing; and Rosemary Perreira, Assistant Professor, Nursing, Maui CC, made a poster presentation at the Conference on Nursing Education at the MCP Hahanemann University in Orlando, Florida.

Denise Cohen, Instructor, Nursing, Maui CC, was certified as a Nurse Practitioner and completed the Masters Degree program in Nursing.

G. Robert Converse, Director, The Learning Center, Maui CC, presented papers at the Global Systems Analysis & Simulation Association Conference at the University of Tampere, Finland, and at the League for Innovation conferences in New Orleans and Chicago, and at the National Science Foundation Conference in Alexandria, Virginia.

Liz d'Argy, former Dean of Instruction, and Richard Kipper, Chair of the Provost Advisory Council, Maui CC, co-chaired the 4th Annual Telethon, when more than 300 participants from the college and community generated over $254,000 in funds for the college.

Hiroko DeLeon, Assistant professor, Japanese, Maui CC, has established an on-going exchange with the Kure National College of Technology in Japan, whereby students exchanged conversations over e-mail throughout the year, and KURE students visited Kahului for three days, participating in programs speaking English and Japanese.

Dawn Duensing, Lecturer, History, Maui CC, served as the scholar for "Lives Worth Knowing," a reading and discussion series at the Wailuku Public Library, one of only 35 sites in the nation to receive this grant sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dawn also served on the County Cultural Resources Commission and produced two publications, including the oral history "Paia: Evolution of a Community" and "Maui in History: A Guide to Resources."

John Dunnicliffe, State Project Director, and Laura Bohnwer, Assistant Project Director, Maui CC, received notification on release of an additional $2.5 million for the Rural Development (RDA) Project. The RDA lead agency among 41 community agencies, has produced a working model of the new Hui-Net System, which will enable clients to electronically transfer among agencies without filling out duplicate intake forms, provide direct access to employment opportunities, and connect to the national and local US Department of Labor One Stop Job Centers.

Jill Fitzpatrick, UH Media Specialist, Maui CC, designed the award winning Maui County Fair Booth which took Overall Best Exhibitor, the third year in a row gaining this top prize. The booth was operated by more than 75 faculty and staff throughout the four-day duration of the Fair.

Molli Fleming, Instructor, Spanish, and Renee Riley, Associate Professor of English, Maui CC, were sponsors of the student honor society, Psi Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, which collected 800 children's books (more than doubling the National Challenge of 300 books) for donation to needy children at the women and homeless shelters in the hope of defeating literacy.

Kate Flicklinger, Instructor, Science, Maui CC, was the invited speaker at the Portland, Oregon conference on International Design and Technology sponsored by Bioforum, a national society of community college and university educators in science.

Kathryn Fletcher, Instructor, Anthropology, and Kate Sample, Video Producer, Maui CC, have preserved recollections of life on Maui through interviews with two community leaders of Chinese descent in connection with the Maui County Chinese New Year's festival, with the video shown on the College Cable Channel 12. The authors also assisted history students at Maui High School to videotape elder family members to document their memoirs.

Craig Gardner, Instructor, Drama, Maui CC, produced the original 2nd annual Theatrical production entitled "Happy Hour" at the `Iao Theater. This well-received variety showcased all original material assembled, written, and acted by students. Craig also performed in Maui Community Theatre's female version of the "Odd Couple" which received excellenct reviews.

BK Griesemer, Professor, Business Careers, Maui CC, was the treasurer and Maui representative to the state Mediation Centers of Hawai`i, Inc., a not-for-profit coalition for Mediation Centers. She also served as immediate past president, board member, and mediator of the local Mediation Services of Maui.

Lui Hokoana, Coordinator, Po`okela program, Maui CC, spear-headed the 2nd annual Native Hawaiian Leadership Conference attended by more than 250 high school and post-secondary students from across the state.

Donna Haytko-Paoa, Associate Professor, and Moloka`i Education Center Coordinator, Maui CC, synchronized the completion of the Moloka`i Education Center, the first college campus on the island of Molokai.

Michelle Katsutani, Instructor, Counseling, Maui CC, served as the Kula District Captain to organize and supervise the vote on delegates to the Native Hawaiian Convention.

Thomas Hussey, Instructor, Automotive Technology, Maui CC, was head coach of the Maui Special Olympics Soccer Team which won the 1999 state championship.

Malia Johnson, Assistant Professor, Nursing, Maui CC, gave a presentation at the 17th annual International Nursing & Computer Conference in Boston and a poster presentation "Weaving the Tapestry of Nursing Education" In Bellveue, Washington.

Nancy Johnson, Associate Professor, Nursing, Maui CC, was the recipient of a $78,000 grant from the federal Area Health Education Center (AHEC) to research the impact of tele-health on the progression of renal disease in Native Hawaiian diabetics which was approved by the University of Hawai`i Committee on Human Subjects. Nancy served on the board of Trustees for Hale Makua and the state Board of Directors for AHEC.

Marge Kelm, Assistant Professor, Nursing, Maui CC, was the vice chair of the country Council on Aging and chair of the Alzheimer's Advisory Board, Maui Branch.

Hollis Lee, Assistant Professor, Automotive Technology, and Thomas Hussey, Instructor, Automotive Technology, Maui CC, were certified by the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF) as Evaluation Team Leaders to assess and accredit education facilities nationwide. The specialized training was received while attending the annual North American College Automotive teachers (NACAT) conference in Charleston, South Carolina.

Kuuipo Lum and Cyrilla Pascual, Instructors, Office Administration and Technology, and Wallette Pellegrino, Assistant Professor, Cooperative Education, Maui CC, developed the OAT Tech Center whereby students take in "live" clerical jobs for faculty, students, and the community for Cooperative Education credit.

Dick Mayer, Professor, Social Science, Maui CC, served on three Maui county-wide committees: the Council Sub-Committee on Energy to advise the County of Maui on energy alternatives; the Integrated Energy Committee, which advised Maui Electric Company in preparation of their long-term energy plan; and the Kula Community Association.

Brian McKinnon, Student Activities Coordinator, Maui CC, implemented "Ask Me Tables" whereby 22 faculty, staff, administrators, and students assisted more than 100 students in the first two days of classes.

Debbie Nakama, Articulation Coordinator, Maui CC, was Fellowship Director for the Founder Region of the Soroptomist International, which awarded the top two of three scholarship awards ($10,000 and $8,000) to students from Hawaii pursuing a doctorate.

Jeannie Pezzoli, Assistant Dean of Instruction, Maui CC, was listed as co-contributor in the Dr. Grayson's recent publication of SAGE: Student Achievement and Gender Equity, the adaptation of GESA materials to the adult learner. Jeannie was also vice chair of the Maui County Grants Review Committee, whose recommendations to the Mayor awarded $2.5 million to non-profit agencies, and served as president of the Maui Outdoor Circle and secretary of the AOAO Koa Resort.

flo wiger, Dean of Instruction, Maui CC, gave the commencement address at the banquet for American Indian graduates of Minnesota College and was named Outstanding American Indian Educator in Minnesota for 1999.
